Good evaluation score for research groups at AHUS

AHUSIn the large evaluation of research in biology, medicine and health sciences conducted by the the Norwegian Research Council in 2011, many of the research groups scored very well. - It is particularly gratifying that Torbjørn Omland’s researchgroup (Cardiothoracic Research Group) got top marks, says research director Hilde Lurås. It shows that Ahus with a targeted effort may succeed to bring research at an international elite level.

As two additional researchgroups got very good (the Clinical and Molecular Oncology Research Group headed by Vessela Kristensen and the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Research Group headed by Anne Eskild) and Helsetjensteforskningen got the character good, we can conclude that four of our eight research groups hold international standard, continues Lurås.

The expert panels have also given good input on how Ahus could further strengthen the research activities by continuing to sharpen the research and organizing it in large groups, further develop the integration between research and clinic, and to give priority to more full-time researchers. Deputy managing director Stein Vaaler thinks it is very gratifying that the research organization of Ahus receives positive review. - It shows that the targeted work we have done at the system level gives results.

The purpose of the Research Council's academic evaluations was to undertake a critical review of the strengths and weaknesses of research in biology, medicine and health sciences, including psychology from an international perspective. The evaluation has focused mainly on the scientific quality and relevance, and aims to identify research areas that need to be strengthened to ensure that Norway has the skills needed in areas of great national importance.

Seven panels composed of international experts in their fields, have completed the evaluation. Ahus reported in four research groups in Panel 4a: Clinical Medicine (selected disciplines), two in Panel 4b: Clinical Medicine (selected disciplines), one in Panel 5: Community and Health Sciences and one in Panel 6: The Psychology and Psychiatry. The conclusions are collected in a report from each of the panels and an overall report which includes findings, conclusions and recommendations that cut across the seven panels. The reports are available at the Norwegian Research Councils webpage, click here for direct link.
