Innovation has been at the heart of Sunnaas Rehabilitation Hospital in Oslo for over 50 years. Yet, during recent years, the hospital felt it needed to carve out a more focused innovation strategy. 

Sunnaas Rehabilitation Hospital is one of the largest rehabilitation hospitals in Europe. The hospital has the responsibility for trauma treatment and rehabilitation within the South-Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority, and is the hospital in Norway spending most on R&D after Oslo University Hospital – Rikshospitalet.

Iacob Mathiesen, CEO Otivio AS. Photo: Oslo Business MemoOslo Medtech member Otivio AS has raised NOK 5 million in venture capital from private investors. Approximately half was raised by existing shareholders, including Otivio CEO Iacob Mathiesen.

Otivio develops treatment solutions and instruments based on technology, originally developed at the University of Oslo, which improves blood flow to the skin of patients. The company develops a product for temperature management of patients and one product for wound healing. Both systems rely on the improved blood flow to the skin.

Mobile phones can be a challenge for both doctors and patients. When doctors are available all the time, they are prone to many interruptions.

- Doctors are disrupted in most situations, often while they are sterile dressed, says researcher Terje Solvoll at The Norwegian Centre for Integrated Care and Telemedicine (NST). He will soon finalize his Ph.D thesis on communication between healthcare professionals.

The contest “Power Up in the game of life" recieved 12 applications by the deadline 3. May. The applications came from both startups and established gaming companies, but academia and municipalities are also among the participants. Several applications were also participating in phase 1, launched at The Gathering 2013. I am pleased that we received so many applications and although the majority of the participants are from the Oslo region, the south-west and northern Norway are also represented. Expected allocation is NOK 750 000 divided into 3 projects.

Cecilie L. Buøen, Oslo MedtechOslo Medtech has together with Helse Sør-Øst RHF and "NHO/KS Nasjonalt program for leverandørutvikling" and 6 other Nordic regional health authorities and partners, been granted a Nordic development project within Innovative Procurement.  Nordic Innovation is financing the project. The Nordic project has been given the name “Public-Private Innovation Net”, and Cecilie Louise Buøen has been engaged by Oslo Medtech as the project manager for the Norwegian part of the project.

CHALLENGE: Develop a concept for a game application that includes concept / proposal and budget for the project

The healthcare sector is seeking games solutions that can help solve future health challenges. Oslo Medtech launches in cooperation with Regional Research Fund – the Capital, Sunnaas Hospital and The Gathering, the competition "Power up in the game of life - Phase 2".

The competition aims to inspire the development of creative game-solutions to manage, motivate and train the patients and the elderly, prevent injury and / or simplify and streamline our healthservices.

Britain is one of the largest markets for e-health in Europe and provides great opportunities for Norwegian medtech companies. However, introduction in the UK market requires patience.
E-health company CSAM Health, based in Norway, has established itself in Sweden through a partnership with Evry, the development office is in Philippines and the UK market is covered with a sales office.

- We started CSAM UK in late 2008, after we had actively considered the UK market through 2008. And we start to do business in 2013. We see the same thing with other similar companies that have established themselves in the UK, it takes about five years before you can expect sales, says Glenn Kenneth Bruun, innovation and strategy director of CSAM Health.

Medtechcompany ConceptoMed from Ballstad in Lofoten has received NOK 4 million in grant from Innovation Norway. ConceptoMed aims to simplify medical procedures and do medical work safer both for users and patients.

Conceptomed's first product is as screen to hide surgical interventions and improve working conditions for both patients and medical personnel. Design is an important feature for ConceptoMed, and the company develops its products in cooperation with the designers in K8 Industridesign.

The Norwegian Parliamentary election is to be held Monday, September 9th 2013. The red-green coalition government formed by the Labour Party, the Socialist Left Party and the Centre Party has been in office for the last two election periods. The current polls indicate a regime change with The Conservative party and the Progress Party forming a majority.

One of the main issues in the election campaigns will be health and how the different parties will solve the health challenges. Long queues to get treatment, ineffectiveness and quality issues, demographic changes with a strong growth in the number of elderly and how to take in use technology, new products and solutions in solving these challenges, are themes that have high interest in the population and will create political debate.

Leading up to the election, Oslo Medtech will challenge the leading politicians on the main political issues within health, and publish the interviews in our monthly newsletter. The Conservative Party and Bent Høie are second out!

SeeviaThe startup company Seevia AS sees itself as a pro version of Skype, providing video communication serviced for the health sector and public services. Now the Måløy based company joins Oslo Medtech.

Gentian Three Oslo Medtech companies were selected from nearly 700 candidates for the regional finals of DNB's Innovation Award. Gentian Technology AS from Moss passed all the hurdles and went on to receive a third place in the national final.

Great interest and fierce competition have characterized the battle for DNB's Innovation Award, with NOK 1.000.000 to the winner. DNB cooperate with the Oslo Innovation Center and Veritas to ensure quality, interdisciplinary and a broad range of ideas, and to strengthen the process of selecting candidates for the regional finals.

67 New Innovation Projects in 2012Oslo Medtech contributed to and initiated 67 new innovation projects in 2012, which secured total funding of NOK 53 million. - This illustrates the innovating potential of the medtech cluster and I can promise that we will continue to work hard to bring out new and exciting projects in 2013, says Oslo Medtech CEO Kathrine Myhre.

A high level of activity, commitment and energy characterize the Oslo Medtech cluster  in 2012. Last autumn market an important milestone as Oslo Medtech was granted Arena status for two more years, after it was originally granted Arena status for three years starting in 2009.

VRI ehealth and medtech, an important program for companiesOslo Medtech has in 2012 developed an extensive portfolio of companies enrolled on VRI projects within medtech and e-health, comprising over 20 companies.
VRI is one of The Research Council of Norways main support mechanism for research and innovation in Norway`s regions. The primary goal for VRI is to encourage innovation, knowledge development, and added value through research and development cooperation between the business community and research institutions. VRI is a ten year program started in 2007.

The Trondheim based medtech company MedXense has secured 10 million NOK in soft funding over the last 18 months to develop a sensor for continuous glucose monitoring in patients under intensive care.
- This funding is crucial to make us mature enough to approach investor capital, says chairman Eivind Andersen.
The soft funding is granted from four different sources; NTNU Discovery, Central Norway Regional Health Authority, The Research Council of Norway and Innovation Norway.

BIA programApplicants will receive a total NOK 360 million in BIA-support from The Research Council of Norway.The final application deadline is February 13th, 2013.

Through the start-up company's own webpage, "Canary" has become a hot item for house-owners, with sales of 4,000 items the first 12 months since introduction. "The reception in the market is amazing," say co-founders and owners Eirik Næss-Ulseth and Halvor Wøien.

Bjørkli has been assigned as a project leader for Oslo Medtech's new Design, Developmemt and Manufacturing network.Dr.psychologist Cato Alexander Bjørkli, associate professor in industrial- and organizational psychology at Department of Psychology, Oslo University, has been assigned as a project leader for Oslo Medtech`s new Design, Development & Manufacturing network.
Oslo Medtech established the network in the fall of 2012, with the overall aim to strengthen the competence and position in the health market for the design, development and manufacturing companies. Further, the network will enable members to provide better services to the medtech and eHealth companies.

EasyRollerOslo Medtech member EasyRoller has developed a wheel chair without metal or loose parts. EasyRoller`s key proposition is to reduce the ballooning life cycle cost and deliver wheel chair solution for environments where metal is unwanted.
EasyRollerAS has developed a unique and 100 percent thermoplastic wheel chair designed by BårdEker, completely without metal components and loose parts. Ten years after version one, the company is currently introducing EasyRoller 2.

Fimreite SoftwareMedtech company Fimreite Software based in Horten has entered the Himalayas with its PaCentric system to transfer medical images from remote villages to hospitals. Nepal also serves as a starting point to enter the huge Indian market.
Khagendra Koirala from Nepal attended a master in biotechnology at the Hedmark University College when he got in contact with Svein Fimreite, CEO of Fimreite Software. Fimreite Software has developed a system to timely and efficient share and access patient imaging and medical data across the boundaries of healthcare facilities. The solution is called PaCentric.

VRIGunnar Sjøwall and his  company Lettbo AS is working with Department of Informatics at Oslo University to build an overarching platform for assisted care technology.
Lettbo was awarded VRI funding in the fall of 2012, one of The Research Council of Norway`s main support mechanism for research and innovation in Norway`s regions. The primary goal for VRI is to encourage innovation, knowledge development, and added value through research and development cooperation between the companies and research institutions.

Neomed Management, the international venture capital investment firm exclusively focused on the healthcare industry, has agreed to sell the US-based medical technology company Vessix Vacular Inc. to Boston Scientific for up to 425 million USD.

Neomed, with offices in both Norway and Switzerland, is the largest shareholder in Vessix Vascular through NeoMed Innovation IV L.P., following its investment in a Series A financing in 2007 and in subsequent financings. NeoMed, which was the first institutional venture capital investor in Vessix with a shareholding of approximately 24 percent, has served on Vessix’ Board of Directors and has been closely involved with the company and its strategic development.

The aging population, rationalization of health care throughout the world and the explosion in lifestyle-related diseases will affect the healthcare industry in the coming years, creating huge opportunities for the medtech business

- Many people talk about the problems associated with an aging population. Another way to look at this is that this group, which is largely affluent, represents a fantastic backlog for medtech companies that can offer the right products and services, says Glenn Kenneth Bruun, innovation and strategy Director of CSAM Health. Oslo Medtech has initiated a Swedish-Norwegian cooperation project, aiming to develop the Nordic region to become a frontrunner in the medtech industry.

The collaborative project is funded by Innovation Norway and Vinnova in Sweden, and includes a number of clusters in Norway and Sweden. The program runs for one year, where the main purpose is to identify the areas that are appropriate to cooperate, and initiate activities that means a real difference for member companies of those clusters.

Five Norwegian medtech and ehealth companies presented to investors under Medtech Investment Day Nordic in Stockholm. They were given four minutes each to tell their story.

The annual investor conference Medtech Investment Day Nordic, organized by Oslo Medtech and fellow Nordic clusters and associations for medical technology and partners, was held in Stockholm in mid-September. In the audience were a few hundred investors. On stage 29 Nordic medtech companies ready to present themselves – and of them, 5 Norwegian.

The program is very popular, and 90 percent of the students get jobs in medtech companies. The program is funded by the VRI-program for Regional R&D and Innovation (see facts further down).

Manager Eivind Andersen says it's a win-win situation, establishing stronger links between health technology communities in Trondheim and Oslo. Forsight process (forward thinking)Oslo Medtech kicks off this fall with a series of workshops as part of the efforts to rapidly develop   the knowledge-intensive and internationally competitive medtech industry and cluster in Norway. The workshops are an integral part of a Foresight based process just started in Oslo Medtech.

To reach the ambitious goals of the cluster, the Board of Oslo Medtech gave a go-ahead just before summer to adopt a so-called Foresight Program. Foresight (forward-thinking) is an established and proven approach for dealing with future challenges, and companies and organizations have used Foresight since the 1970s.

Many companies are involved in research and development (R&D) without being aware that these activities can give rise to tax deductions. SkatteFUNN supports both research and development projects, and you decide the projects.

Applications received before September 1 is guaranteed being processed before the year end. Upon approval, this year's project costs could be added into the tax deduction basis.

During 2012 the Public Procurement Act and its regulations will be amended on a number of points. The amendments give the providers stronger measures against the clients' violations of the regulations, particularly against illegal direct procurement. In addition, the new sanction called "without effect"  means that clients' breach of procurement rules may have financial consequences for the selected vendor, so that a contract may be waived in whole or in part.

Comprehensive American study commissioned by the Medtech Resource Alliance and Minnesota Medical Device Alliance, surveyed Minnesota-based CEOs and venture capitalists to gauge their overall impressions and willingness to invest in medical technology while in Minnesota.

- “We are the Silicon Valley of the device world having the largest concentration of medtech jobs in the world right here in Minnesota,” said Mark DuVal, a regulatory attorney who helps medtech companies navigate the path through FDA. “The need to insist on improvement at FDA is vitally critical and is recognized in a bipartisan way by our Minnesota congressional delegation.”

Two and a half years after the start, Oslo Medtech is ready to take the next step  in the building up of the national industry cluster. - We have already received far greater support than we had hoped for when we started, says Oslo Medtech chairman Carl Christian Gilhuus-Moe.
 
- We are in a phase now where we need to think carefully about how we can take a step further and develop Oslo Medtech to a meaningful and interactive national industrial cluster. The Board has therefore initiated a strategy process, including work on an analysis on how the health care industry will look like in 2025, says Carl Christian Gilhuus-Moe.

Oslo Medtech has been granted Arena status for two more years. The decision lays a solid foundation for realizing the potential of the medtech sector in Norway.

Muskel og sjelettlidelser koster samfunnet 86 milliarder årlig.Muscle and skeletal disorders cost the Norwegian society at least 86 billion NOKs each year. Although it is possible to save enormous amounts, these health problems receive little attention and have a low priority in the public health care sector in Norway.

Muscle and skeletal disorders (MSD) is the most frequent cause of pain. About 75 percent of the Norwegian population experience these symptoms over the last month, which often leads to reduced functional capacity, impaired quality of life and problems functioning at work.

In 2011, Oslo Medtech increased its membership base with a total of 35 new members. During the first half this year, a total of 21 new applicants became Oslo Medtech members. That brings the total to 120 members.

The BIA (Brukerstyrt innovasjonsarena) program is a funding scheme directed at R&D projects where the grants awarded by The Research Council of Norway represent 35 percent of the total project cost. The total amount of BIA funding available from The Research Council this year is NOK 500 million.

Medtech company  Abilia is ready to tender its smart house solutions to the planned municipal housing for elderly in Oslo and Skien.  Abilia joined Oslo Medtech speed dating meeting and found five potential partners.

Oslo and Skien will build up to 1000 new houses for elderly in need of care in the coming years, based on smarthouse technologies. The tender was launched April 23rd in Oslo with a 45 days deadline for entrants to deliver their offer. Skien will launch its tender in June.

Wireless Patient Recording Medical (WPR Medical) will soon launch its brand new wireless ECG monitoring device. WPR Medical was part of the Oslo Medtech organized tour to USA in May, and is seeking partners with access to markets.

It has taken the Arendal-based company nearly ten years and NOK 40 million to develop the wireless ECG monitoring device. The device was approved by both FDA and EU about a year ago, and has been put through extensive clinical trials in both Sørlandet Hospital Arendal and Feiring klinikken.

A young Norwegian surgeon has probably solved a problem no one else in the world was able to solve. After five years, the prototype is ready. Medtech company Urological AS hopes to land its first contract before year end.

Urologist and surgeon Knut Eilert Karlsen is the inventor of Cath-Tract, which is a safe vesical access sheath that simplifies indwelling catheter care. He founded Urological in 2006 and the company has since developed his idea into a patented product soon to be released in the markets.

Just Ebbesen, CEO Østfold Hospital at Oslo Medtech seminar on Game & Health, March 2011Østfold Hospital Trust will be the first hospital in Europe to use game technology to model and simulate the new hospital buildings and to train hospital staff in the various work processes and scenarios. The method has been tested out in the procurement process of Oslo Municipalities project Omsorg+. At the Arendalskonferansen 21st and 22nd June, Oslo Municipality and Oslo Medtech presented the process – and inspired other Norwegian municipalities to use the same method in their procurement processes in the healthcare sector.

Significantly better life quality with continent ileostomy. Ostomycure in Kirurgen 2011A clinical trial is currently underway in collaboration between Akershus University Hospital, Oslo University Hospital and OstomyCure AS. The goal is to create a continent ileostomy with a continent mechanical valve with the help of a percutaneous implant that can be closed with a lid attached to the implant.

Can gaming technology solve some of the challenges in the helath sector? This was the main topic of the seminar that Oslo Medtech hosted together with The Norwegian Computer Society and the Department of Informatics

Project results shows that gaming technology may succesfully be used for the activation of the elderly, according to Mektron. Lærdal Medical uses various forms of simulation to train people to save lives. Østfold hospital uses game technology to simulate hospital services. SimSurgery develops training simulator for Laprascopic Surgery.

Oslo Medtech, Regional Research Funds – Oslo, Sunnaas Rehabilitation Hospital and The Gathering will launch a health app competition at this year`s computer party in Vikingskipet Olympic Arena in Hamar. A total prize pool of NOK 850.000 is at stake.

“Power up in life`s game” is a two phase competition which aims to stimulate to development of creative and useful game technology solutions to simplify and streamline everyday life for users/patients and caretaker personnel.  First Phase of the competition, which requires the ideas to be sketched, will be launched by the Minister of Government Administration, Reform and Church Affairs Rigmor Aasrud at The Gathering during Easter, with total prize money at NOK 100.000. Oslo Medtech, VRI and Innovation Norway finance the first phase prize pool, and the competition is open to everyone.

ENIAC Joint Undertaking (www. Eniac.eu) will issue the fourth call for proposals in spring 2011, and new project ideas will be discussed at a brookerage event in Berlin 1-2 February. ENIAC JU is funding research within nanoelectronics including sensors, and one of the application areas is “Health and the Aging Society”. The 2011 call will focus on “Home Healthcare” and “Hospital Healthcare”.
