Just over a year ago, the 30 year old doctor and Ph. D. student Marte Bratlie had an idea. Today she has a company and a patent pending prototype. Marte Bratlie and the company she started, RemovAid, shows that even in the development of medtech equipment it is possible to take great strides in a short time.
Innovation has been at the heart of Sunnaas Rehabilitation Hospital in Oslo for over 50 years. Yet, during recent years, the hospital felt it needed to carve out a more focused innovation strategy. Sunnaas Rehabilitation Hospital is one of the largest rehabilitation hospitals in Europe. The hospital has the responsibility for trauma treatment and rehabilitation within the South-Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority, and is the hospital in Norway spending most on R&D after Oslo University Hospital – Rikshospitalet.
Oslo Medtech member Otivio AS has raised NOK 5 million in venture capital from private investors. Approximately half was raised by existing shareholders, including Otivio CEO Iacob Mathiesen.
Otivio develops treatment solutions and instruments based on technology, originally developed at the University of Oslo, which improves blood flow to the skin of patients. Mobile phones can be a challenge for both doctors and patients. When doctors are available all the time, they are prone to many interruptions. - Doctors are disrupted in most situations, often while they are sterile dressed, says researcher Terje Solvoll at The Norwegian Centre for Integrated Care and Telemedicine (NST). He will soon finalize his Ph.D thesis on communication between healthcare professionals.
The contest “Power Up in the game of life" recieved 12 applications by the deadline 3. May. The applications came from both startups and established gaming companies, but academia and municipalities are also among the participants. Several applications were also participating in phase 1, launched at The Gathering 2013. I am pleased that we received so many applications and although the majority of the participants are from the Oslo region, the south-west and northern Norway are also represented. Expected allocation is NOK 750 000 divided into 3 projects.
Oslo Medtech has together with Helse Sør-Øst RHF and "NHO/KS Nasjonalt program for leverandørutvikling" and 6 other Nordic regional health authorities and partners, been granted a Nordic development project within Innovative Procurement. Nordic Innovation is financing the project. The Nordic project has been given the name “Public-Private Innovation Net”, and Cecilie Louise Buøen has been engaged by Oslo Medtech as the project manager for the Norwegian part of the project.
Oslo Medtech is one of three finalists for the prize Innovation Norway Cluster Award (2013), which is awarded by Innovation Norway at the conference “Signalkonferansen” 28th of May.

Innovation Norway and Oslo Medtech have developed TINC Health to make it easier for Norwegian health technology startups to realize their potential. TINC Health is a mini copy of the four week long development program for Norwegian ICT companies in Silicon Valley.
The startup company Seevia AS sees itself as a pro version of Skype, providing video communication serviced for the health sector and public services. Professor Dr. Frode Lærum, Oslo, has been named a Knight of 1 Class of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav. Frode Lærum received the award for his contribution to the development of Norwegian medicine and healthcare.

Oslo Medtech has in 2012 developed an extensive portfolio of companies enrolled on VRI projects within medtech and e-health, comprising over 20 companies. VRI is one of The Research Council of Norways main support mechanism for research and innovation in Norway`s regions. On January 31st, 2013 TFS International (TFS) signed an asset transfer agreement with Semcon Caran (Semcon) in a takeover of Semcon’s contract research business focusing on technology- and electronic data capture (EDC) services. The Trondheim based medtech company MedXense has secured 10 million NOK in soft funding over the last 18 months to develop a sensor for continuous glucose monitoring in patients under intensive care. - This funding is crucial to make us mature enough to approach investor capital, says chairman Eivind Andersen. The soft funding is granted from four different sources; NTNU Discovery, Central Norway Regional Health Authority, The Research Council of Norway and Innovation Norway.
Lars Halvor Langmoen is appointed as new CEO of SpinChip Diagnostics, the medtech company developing lab-on-a-chip technology for point of care use. - I've always had a fascination for and a strong interest in innovation and growth companies, and SpinChip Diagnostics is such a company, says Langmoen.
Applicants will receive a total NOK 360 million in BIA-support from The Research Council of Norway.The final application deadline is February 13th, 2013. - BIA is very important for the Medtech sector. Especially the small and medium sized companies, but also the more established companies, sees the support from the BIA program as vital to the product development, says serial entrepreneur Eirik Næss-Ulseth, member of the Oslo Medtech Board.
Oslo Medtech member Corentium AS has invented the electronic radon meter "Canary", introduced to the market in the autumn of 2011. Through the start-up company's own webpage, "Canary" has become a hot item for house-owners, with sales of 4,000 items the first 12 months since introduction. "The reception in the market is amazing," say co-founders and owners Eirik Næss-Ulseth and Halvor Wøien.

Oslo Science Park has available office spaces for medtech and ehealth companies in the Medtech Growth House. 600 sq.m of new, unique office space with panoramic views will also be available from April 2013 at the top of the Oslo Science Park.
Dr.psychologist Cato Alexander Bjørkli, associate professor in industrial- and organizational psychology at Department of Psychology, Oslo University, has been assigned as a project leader for Oslo Medtech`s new Design, Development & Manufacturing network. Oslo Medtech established the network in the fall of 2012, with the overall aim to strengthen the competence and position in the health market for the design, development and manufacturing companies. Further, the network will enable members to provide better services to the medtech and eHealth companies.
Oslo Medtech member EasyRoller has developed a wheel chair without metal or loose parts. EasyRoller`s key proposition is to reduce the ballooning life cycle cost and deliver wheel chair solution for environments where metal is unwanted. EasyRollerAS has developed a unique and 100 percent thermoplastic wheel chair designed by BårdEker, completely without metal components and loose parts. Ten years after version one, the company is currently introducing EasyRoller 2.
Medtech company Fimreite Software based in Horten has entered the Himalayas with its PaCentric system to transfer medical images from remote villages to hospitals. Nepal also serves as a starting point to enter the huge Indian market. Khagendra Koirala from Nepal attended a master in biotechnology at the Hedmark University College when he got in contact with Svein Fimreite, CEO of Fimreite Software. Fimreite Software has developed a system to timely and efficient share and access patient imaging and medical data across the boundaries of healthcare facilities. The solution is called PaCentric.
Gunnar Sjøwall and his company Lettbo AS is working with Department of Informatics at Oslo University to build an overarching platform for assisted care technology. Lettbo was awarded VRI funding in the fall of 2012, one of The Research Council of Norway`s main support mechanism for research and innovation in Norway`s regions. The primary goal for VRI is to encourage innovation, knowledge development, and added value through research and development cooperation between the companies and research institutions.
Ever since the European cooperation program Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) was started in 2008, the Norwegian research and innovation communities have made their mark with very high participation and impact, The Research Council of Norway writes. In competition with large and heavy research and innovation communities in 23 countries, "little Norway" has had an impressive success.

Oslo Medtech and Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences have developed a partnership that gives students the opportunity to resolve projects for medtech companies. The program is very popular, and 90 percent of the students get jobs in medtech companies. The program is funded by the VRI-program for Regional R&D and Innovation (see facts further down).
A new agreement between the Department of Informatics, University of Oslo, and the new incubator StartupLab will make it easier for top IT talent at the University of Oslo to get out of business. Newly established StartupLab, with its 1,000 square meters is located in Oslo Innovation Center in Oslo, will be a place where it is particularly easy to get started with the creation of technology companies.
NTNU Technology Transfer in Trondheim is one of the newest members of the Oslo Medtech. Manager Eivind Andersen says it's a win-win situation, establishing stronger links between health technology communities in Trondheim and Oslo. Andersen is also elected as a new member of the board of Oslo Medtech. The new Trondheim member represents a growing number of companies and institutions across the country entering Oslo Medtech membership.
Setred AS is the first among members of Oslo Medtech that has utilized pre-project funding from The Norwegian Research Council's «Program for Regional R&D and Innovation» (VRI). The VRI pre-project of Setred has led to a BIA-funded project that can revolutionize 3D-based ultrasound visualization of complex heart surgery.
Oslo Medtech kicks off this fall with a series of workshops as part of the efforts to rapidly develop the knowledge-intensive and internationally competitive medtech industry and cluster in Norway. During 2012 the Public Procurement Act and its regulations will be amended on a number of points. The amendments give the providers stronger measures against the clients' violations of the regulations, particularly against illegal direct procurement. In addition, the new sanction called "without effect" means that clients' breach of procurement rules may have financial consequences for the selected vendor, so that a contract may be waived in whole or in part.

Medtech Growth House in Oslo Innovation Center has become a major focal point for medtech companies. - We have great pleasure and benefit of each other, says Jan Aage Røtnes, CEO of Urological.
- There are a number of obvious synergies. We sit together and learn from each other, share experiences and useful tips and benefit from each other's networks. If we have guests, we always present them to the other companies, says Røtnes.
Oslo Medtechs meeting program this autumn starts week 34 with the QA-Reg meeting on the new RHOS directive at Tuesday 28th, and the breakfastmeeting on “Go to Market Strategy” at Thursday 30th. The Medtech Investment Day Nordic in Stockholm, September 13th will be one of this seasons hot-spots where Nordic medtech inventors meets investors from the European countries.
Comprehensive American study commissioned by the Medtech Resource Alliance and Minnesota Medical Device Alliance, surveyed Minnesota-based CEOs and venture capitalists to gauge their overall impressions and willingness to invest in medical technology while in Minnesota.
- “We are the Silicon Valley of the device world having the largest concentration of medtech jobs in the world right here in Minnesota,” said Mark DuVal, a regulatory attorney who helps medtech companies navigate the path through FDA. “The need to insist on improvement at FDA is vitally critical and is recognized in a bipartisan way by our Minnesota congressional delegation.”

Østfold Hospital Trust will be the first hospital in Europe to use game technology to model and simulate the new hospital buildings and to train hospital staff in the various work processes and scenarios. Developing software to medical devices can be risky business. – You`ve got to tread carefully not to kill your budget, or your patients, says Oliver Trepte, manager at Oslo Medtech member Hotswap. Trepte described the serious safety issues involved when developing software to medical devices, and the potential pitfalls for developers.

The regional research fund for Oslo and Akershus - Regionale Forskningsfond-Hovedstaden is advertising up to NOK 20 million in pre project funding to mobilizing measures for public and private sector. In 2011 the funds for main projects up to about 100 mill was announced.
Strong start: During January Oslo Mectech-members recieved NOK 21,5 million in grants to early phase innovation projects. That is more than total grants received in 2011.

A clinical trial at the Oslo University Hospital – Rikshospitalet, indicates that patients with intracranial aneurysm bleeds treated with Sensometrics Technology, were more than three times as likely to recover completely as compared to patients treated with traditional methods. Based on the findings, the hospital will integrate Sensometrics as its new, standard treatment method.

This year the special award by Norsk Form, Hedersprisen, went to Laerdal Medical, whose motto is "Helping save lives." They offer training in first aid and airway management. Laerdal Medical was founded in 1940, and has a team of 1400 people in 23 countries on five continents.
PCI Biotech wins the Innovation Award of one million NOK. In addition, the company won the People's price of 100.000 NOK. The money will go to further research on the company's treatment for cancer. PCI Biotech is working intensely to deliver a new treatment against cancer. In cooperation with the Norwegian Radium Hospital has PCI Biotech developed and patented a photosensitive drug that allows the local treatment of cancer tumors. The cure may enhance the effects of chemotheraphy up to a hundred times.
PubGene launched its global search engine for medical scientific information. Managing Director Odd Arild Lehne in PubGene says the method revolutionises the use of scientific information in medical research and health care. He launched the product on the major conference on health IT, MIE 2011.

Springfondet II has committed capital of NOK 100 million and will continue to invest in early-stage technology companies from its base at the Oslo Innovation Center (Forskningsparken). Springfondet II aims to invest in about 10 companies over a three year period. Springfondet will actively participate in developing the companies and then seek an exit for its investments. The Norwegian Government and Kåre Hagen released the Whitepaper on Innovation in Health Care (NOU 2011: 11 – Innovasjon i omsorg) Thursday June 16th. - Future oriented use of technology can meet a lot of the challenges in the health care sector, says Minister of Health and Care Services Anne-Grete Strøm-Erichsen.
Kåre Hagen presented the conclusions of the report at the TEKNA conference Thursday June 16th and at the Arendal conference June 22nd.
For the first time the Norwegian Research Council has allocated funding for innovation projects in the public sector. This is a form of support that have previously been reserved for the business. The project is covering ICT solutions for the healthcare sector.

Project results shows that gaming technology may succesfully be used for the activation of the elderly, according to Mektron. Lærdal Medical uses various forms of simulation to train people to save lives. Østfold hospital uses game technology to simulate hospital services. SimSurgery develops training simulator for Laprascopic Surgery.
Innovation in health care was the theme for the second breakfast meeting with the parliamentary benches from Oslo and Akershus at the Grand Hotel this spring, arranged and hosted by the Confederation of Norwegian Enterprise (NHO). The Intervention Center, Rikshospitalet and Hospital IT showed examples of what new technologies could mean for patients and residents, and for organizations and professionals in hospitals and elderly care, and as a basis for the commercialization of new products and business development.

ENIAC Joint Undertaking (www. Eniac.eu) will issue the fourth call for proposals in spring 2011, and new project ideas will be discussed at a brookerage event in Berlin 1-2 February.
